âNow all that remains is Miss Heywood,â I said, turning to Charlotte, the eldest of the Heywood girls. âMiss Heywood, are you like the rest of us and have a flaw to your name, or are you perfect in every way?â
âThat is not possible for anyone,â she smiled gently, âThough I wish it was an obtainable dream. Well,â she began, sipping her tea down, âI have always done my best to be practical and simple, but I have found, that it only has led to me suppressing passionate feelings, and sometimes those feelings are not the most giving, generous, gentle or gracious.â
âDid you just give four words that start with the letter 'g'?â Elizabeth Heywood asked, âCharlotte, must you be so consistent?â
âLike I stated, Eliza,â Charlotte smiled, âMy darn desire to be practical always wins out in company. But not in mind. No, I can be quite cold and here is my most terrible confession, for which I wish that everyone here shall forgive me.â
âWhat is that?â Mrs. Heywood asked.
âThere are times... when I wish that I was an only child.â
All the sisters groaned at this, and then Marianne picked up her spoon from her saucer and threw it at Charlotte. After I stifled my guffaw, Marianne turned to us and shrugged her shoulders.
âMarianne!â Mrs. Heywood reprimanded.
âForgive me, but I warned you all that I'm the emotionally extreme one.â Then she sat down, smiling at Charlotte, and picked up her tea. âYou confess to regretting my birth and I hit you with a spoon. Consider us even now.â
As we continued to truly enjoy each otherâs company, I began to grow a little curious about the rest of Olesia.
âMrs. Heywood,â I began, âI was wondering if you would be so kind as to be willing to brave the cold and let us take a turn along your fields and look at your farm? I am very fond of walking.â
âI have no objection to it,â She smiled, âAnd I enjoy the compliment.â
We all followed her into the hallways, had our coats taken and Mrs. Heywood retrieved Mr. Heywood and Jason from the billiards room.
âThank you for saving me,â Jason declared when he joined our company, âFor I was losing the game terribly.â
âDon't think we shall never play again,â Mr. Heywood cautioned, âFor I will not be able to deny myself the pleasure of it.â
âHow sorry I am to hear that,â Jason spoke in jest.
The men put on their cloaks and hats as well and we all exited the house and entered the cold.
âI have also told them about the orchards and gardens of Olesia,â Georgiana commented, âI know it is winter now, but I was wondering if you all are planning to maintain it.â
âOh, we certainly shall!â Mr. Heywood remarked, âOne of the many things that tempted me into purchasing Olesia. When the weather is warm, it shall be tended to with much effort, and I will make it the wonder of Kent as it always was.â
âIt is so strange,â I acknowledged, âthat I have never heard of this legendary orchard and garden.
